Entering a new club can be daunting, especially a club that sends payloads to space! The club officers got together one day to brainstorm ideas to tackle the challenges that incoming members face when being exposed to a whole new world of aerospace engineering. They also want to give the club members hands-on experience that will help them gain skills to apply toward their career aspirations. The Astronomy & Physics Club came up with the idea to host workshops led by their very own club members. They hosted their very first workshop on February 27, 2022 and to say it was a success is an understatement!
Led by John Boyer, HASP Electrical Lead, and Andrew Nowakowski, HASP/RSX Team Coding Co-Lead, who collaborated together to came up with a presentation to teach the club members the basics of soldering. Andrew Nowakowski said "The workshop was a great success! It was an incredibly enjoyable experience to host this workshop. There was a wonderful amount of participation and questions which showed that everyone was engaged." Nowakowski pointed out the importance of workshops like these and how they can help the club members contribute to the High Student Altitude Platform (HASP) project and RockSat-X (RSX) project. When asked if he would be interested in hosting another workshop said he would "certainly do it again!" John Boyer also agreed and said "the workshop was a success because there was participation across the board... I think we should do a follow-up workshop with maybe a little project in mind that everyone could keep." Boyer finished off by saying his experience in hosting the first workshop was enjoyable.
The club plans to host more workshops for their club members in the future. If this sounds like something exciting and you would like to participate in, email our club advisor by clicking on 'HOW TO JOIN' ,or navigate to the menu bar, to find out more information.
If you have a skill and are interested in helping the club by hosting a workshop on electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, etc. please contact our club advisor at teresa.ciardi@canyons.edu
